What Actually Happens in a Mediumship Reading

What happens in a mediumship reading, by Megan Vasquez

If you've been thinking about booking a mediumship reading, you probably have a picture in your head: candles, hushed voices, someone vaguely telling you "a man with an M name is here."

That's not what I do. I'm an evidentiary medium, which means I don't start with a message. I start with proof.

Evidence first. Then the message.

Before I tell you what your person wants you to know, I tell you things I have no way of knowing. The nickname only they called you. The object sitting on your desk right now. The color of the rug in the basement you grew up in. How they passed.

You confirm it, and then we talk. By the time we get to the message, you already know who's in the room.

In one reading, I described a basement I'd never been in: mahogany walls, red accents, a heavy wooden table where her grandfather pulled out a chair and sat. She confirmed all of it, then told me the rest: the 1970s paneling, the red shag rug that matched nothing, every holiday meal at that table. "Megan, you are spot on."

What happens, step by step

1. We open the link. I connect and start describing whoever steps forward: how they feel, how they passed, how they treated you, what they're showing me.

2. I give evidence, and you only say "yes," "no" or "maybe." No details, no context, no helping me. This is the part most people find surprising, and it's the part that makes everything else hold up. Short answers keep the evidence clean, so afterward you know it came from spirit and not from you.

3. Once we've confirmed who it is, it opens up. What they want you to know. What they've watched happen in your life since they left. Anything you want to ask them.

My readings are 40 minutes, 1:1, over Zoom, and you get a recording afterward.

How to prepare

  • Don't send me anything in advance. Not who you're hoping for, not how they passed, not a photo. The less I know, the more the evidence will mean to you afterward.
  • Be open to whoever shows up. I can't guarantee one specific person will come through. Nobody honest can.
  • Expect to cry. Almost everyone does, sometimes including me. We can pause. None of it is weird to me.
  • Don't schedule anything big right after. Most people feel fine for about an hour, then it hits them that night. Eat something. Rewatch the recording two or three days later; you'll catch things you missed the first time.

What it actually feels like

Less solemn than you're picturing. I say the strange thing I'm getting before I understand it, because cleaning it up first is how mediums lose the detail that matters. And I laugh, because a lot of what comes through is funny. The people who loved you were funny.

Sometimes the evidence is beautifully specific, like a bright pink Care Bear that unlocked a mother's nickname. Sometimes it's undignified, like the dumb movie you watched together on a Sunday. That's exactly why it works. It's what the people who love you actually remember.

Who it isn't for (yet)

I say this gently:

  • If you're in the first weeks of a loss, acute grief deserves a therapist or grief counselor first. I'm not going anywhere.
  • If you want predictions, mediumship isn't fortune-telling. Spirit isn't a search engine. (For guidance on a specific question, an Intuitive Read is the better fit.)
  • If you need medical, legal or financial answers, that's not my lane, ever.
  • If you want me to convince a skeptic, I won't perform for someone who came to disprove me.

Why I do this work

I was four years old at my grandfather's funeral, and I couldn't understand why everyone was crying, because he was standing right there complimenting my purple sparkly eyeshadow.

I saw and spoke to spirits as a child, closed that door for years after a frightening experience at sixteen, and came back to it through animal communication and formal training in intuition and energetic protection. Then I formally trained my mediumship. Mediumship is a skill. Humans are built for it. Most people just never get permission, language or practice.
